In Defense of the Gray Cardigan
I present myself to you, my friends, in defense of the simple gray cardigan. No one wants to buy one -- why speed money on something you could knit -- nor do we want to knit one -- why knit with gray when there are so many other lovely colors -- yet, we all need one. To demonstrate my solidarity with this stalwart of fashion I happily knit away on my Eliza Cardigan in a wonderfully soft, yet oh-so gray tweedy yarn. Here's to practicality, from time to time.
The fronts and back are finished and joined at the shoulders. I'm zipping through the sleeves and look forward to 2 hours of blissful knitting as I watch Jack Bauer and crew blow things up and be generally horrible to one another -- the joys of 24, I wouldn't miss a second!

Exactly the dilemma I had last year with a basic black watch cap: wouldn't buy it, didn't want to knit it! I resolved my dilemma by buying some super-luxurious black yarn--that made me want to knit it!

Yay for gray! Yup, you're right: we all need one.

Yeah, I could definitely use one. Yours is going to be nice with that patterning going on.

Put me in the camp of feeling that a neutral colored cardigan is a wardrobe necessity. I think that your patterning will take yours from drab to spiffy, though.
On another note, the volume died on our TV just as the translation was given for that arabic phrase right at the end of Monday's episode. It's driving us bananas. Did you catch was it was, & if so, will you let me know? Thanks!

Hurray for gray!!!! I would definitely wear that, and there is certainly some interest in the pattern to keep you from going gray crazy! Very nice.

I love a gray cardigan.
Eliza is looking splendid!

And sometimes you don't want to knit one because you already *did* buy one. One of the warmest items of clothing I own is a gray cardi, 40% angora, half wool, and the rest nylon, with a zipper and slight turtleneck and ... yeah. I couldn't hope to beat that! But gray pullovers? Oh yes, that's next on the list.
Yours looks gorgeous, of course. Oh, and randomly: I've just knit two pairs of gloves with your (i-cord fingers) pattern, and I'm never knitting any other kind ever. Ever, I tell you. They're fantastic. I did 'em at a much smaller gauge, but otherwise I followed your instructions to the letter. GREAT pattern.

I will defend to the death your right to knit gray. Retina-burning colors are for hair, not yarn! (Says the one with somberly colored clothing and fuschia hair ...)

There is nothing wrong with grey -- not only is it an essential classic, it's also a trendy color this coming season. Also, many of our fiber-producing animal friends come in natural shades of grey: sheep, goats, alpacas...so grey is naturally knitworthy!

It looks great. And I LOVE gray. It's been my favorite neutral for years and years . . . (The fact that I've been wearing more brown of late should be no reflection on my love of gray wool.)

What is the lovely gray yarn again?

I love gray. The calmness of the color highlights your stitches. I like your pattern choice. My first Project Spectrum project is going to be a gray sweater.
I too looked forward to a knitting bonanza during 4 hours of 24--knitting TV doesn't get much better than that.

Nona - funny you should mention gray and not surprising that you are on the leading edge of fashion! I just posted an article yesterday about spring color trends that say 'gray' will be the hot neutral for the 2007 Spring season.

The sweater looks great. I knit this pattern in a soft purple. I wear it often. Now, I'm thinking I might need another one in grey.

Gray is beautiful. It will go with everything. Happy knitting to 24.

This is a great article! I think many people ignore their eyes the risk of ultraviolet radiation in the winter. In their view, because it is not hot or the sun is not beating, their eyes are safe.
