Hence the Hat

When in doubt knit a hat.  Advice quickly learned by the followers of Elizabeth Zimmermann's knitting philosophy.  Whether you need to check your gauge, fair-isle colors, or cable combinations EZ advocates for a hat over a swatch.  nona loves the swatch and has been known to knit rather large -- and I mean large -- swatches.  So, knitting a hat in lieu of a swatch was not much of a mental stretch.  As I quickly approached the yoke of my EZ inspired sweater, the question of fair-isle patterns and colors loomed on the horizon -- hence the hat.

Not only was I able to test my pattern ideas, but I ended up with a fun hat as a bonus.  I've said it before and will say it again, that EZ was one smart lady.

What a great hat. I love the color combos and the patterns. I'll keep that in mind when I do some colorwork.

OK, this did it! I have been looking at FI patterns over the last several weeks. I need to finish a couple of things and the hat will go on the needles! Thanks for the encouragement.

nona, if you could only have one EZ book in your collection, which would it be? I'm looking to put my first of EZ books on my wish list, and cannot decide which one. I want "the" EZ book to have, please help! I figure since you talk about EZ a lot, you're the gal to ask. LOVE THE HAT!

I love that first motif, it looks vaguely Aztec, sorry if I am way off base and it is a traditional Scandinavian design. There really is something so pleasing about it.

That is really beautiful! What yarn are you using?

I second Denise's question: clearly I need to get on the EZ bandwagon (I love a woman who speaks such sense!). I've been leaning towards The Opinionated Knitter (at least partly 'cause I love the title). In any case, the hat/swatch is lovely, and I can't wait to see the sweater!

lovely hat - like the idea of a "useful" swatch, makes a ton 'o sense!

The hat rocks, and EZ does, too.

Agreed, these colors and designs are lovely. I am at the beginning of an EZ obsession, and I've seen all the EZ baby sweaters floating around lately. Yesterday, we were watching a DVD at a friend's place, and even though she starts super-basic, there are techniques to be learned!

Historically my swatches haven't been very large, but I think I'll have to revolutionize that and start a hat collection!

What a great idea! That EZ!!!

Nevermind the sweater, I adore that hat. The colors are gorgeous and you did a great job, not that it comes as a surprise because it doesn't. Ok, now let's see the sweater-it's going to be soooo pretty.
