Have An Opinion
While lounging on a tousled bed in scant clothing, Charlotte -- played by Scarlett Johansonn -- models a handknit scarf still on the needles. "Is it done?", she queries her husband John as he frantically packs for the day's photo shoot. A quizzical look followed by a "huh" is all poor Charlotte receives. Would it kill the guy to have an opinion? Is it so hard to say: "perfect! bind off", "one more inch", or "the longer the better, finish the ball". nona thinks, when someone asks for your opinion, it's important to give one even if you don't know what the heck you're talking about -- why not!?

Agreed. Giving your opinion, even if prefaced with "I'm not really sure about this" shows that you are listening and that a person's word matter. Which this scene really underscored - he wasn't really paying attention to *her* in general, so the question wasn't that important to him.

A friend asked me to knit her that exact scarf. I only saw the movie in the theater; any idea of a pattern? And yes, that scene perfectly depicted the state of their relationship.

Mintyfresh,
I suddenly got curious about this too, and a little googling revealed that you can get this pattern for FREE on Amazon by searching inside the book "Mother of Purl" for "Lost in Translation":

It's on page 97 :)

Good advice. And as the first commenter said, it was a statement on their relationship. The last guy I dated went to a number of yarn shops with me, which was a big step up, and now I think I'm only interested in someone who wants to learn to knit! (Hey, I'll learn something to share with him too - I finally learned about football a couple relationships ago...)

Exactly! At least say something! I hate getting a grunt for an answer.

Fortunately, and occasionally unfortunately for some, I'm an "opinion giver". Wishing you and yours Happy & Healthy Holiday!

My husband, while he hates going into yarn stores with me, has picked up a surprising amount of knitting terminology. But that grunt - very telling as far as the characters' relationship was concerned.

yeah, even a knitting novice can say, 'hon, that ain't long enough yet!' such a melancholy movie.

I do not know why, but the site is loaded with my incredibly slow. Is anyone else have this problem or is my final question? I will be back later to see if the problem still exists.
