One Down, Three to Go
The first pair of socks in my Nancy Bush mini-masters sock study is a wrap. Which means, mathematical reader, that I've got one down and three to go.
Madder Ribbed Sock from Nancy Bush's Knitting Vintage Socks
These ribbed socks feature a Dutch Heel and a Star Toe. Would I knit this heel again? No. I find the Dutch Heel to be very square -- and when worn it doesn't stay centered, tending to slip and slouch. Although it was quite easy to knit, this style heel scores a 5 on a scale of 1 to 10.
The Dutch Heel is very square and tends to slip when worn.
I do like the look of the "seam stitch" running down the middle.
How about the toe? Would I knit the Star Toe again? Yes. I really like this toe. It's a little longer and pointer than other style toes and I like how it fits. The toe is shaped symmetrically around 4 points, which is very pretty. The Star Toe scores an 8 on my 10 point scale.
You can just make out 2 of the 4 shaping lines of this Star Toe
Overall I like how these socks turned out -- loving the yarn, ribbing, and toe, while feeling mediocre about the heel. It's fun experimenting with various heels and toes and I look forward to casting on my 2nd pair in this sock study -- the "Lichen Ribbed Socks".

Fun project! Thanks for sharing your progress and reviews of the different heels and toes. That yarn is lovely! And so is the toe. Very symmetrical.

Wow. Didn't you just start these? I always have to start socks 14 times and they still fit wrong...it is annoying. Wow. You are fast.
Oh...the socks are lovely! :o)

I'm amazed at how fast you knit these. They are super.

I made my first star toe socks recently. When I wore them it occurred to me that it would have been cooler to work the swirls on the toes in opposite directions. As it is both toes swirl to the same side which looked a little funny to me.

They look great, although it's too bad that the heel doesn't fit right. It looked strange to me, too -- that pic of your heel looks like a knee!

Thanks for the sock review. I might try that star toe sometime.

I've done that heel before when I was trying to keep the self-striping yarn well, striping. I had the same problems as you, but it does look nice. There's always a trade off.

Lovely socks! Isn't that toe fabulous? Interesting that you don't like the heel. Mine seems to fit just fine. Must be a foot shape difference. And I do enjoy that center seam.

Hi Nona,
I have a finished project for the Peaceful Palms knitalong. They are the Fingerless Mitts from Alterknits. I have them posted on my 12/22 post.

Great socks...I don't know about the pointy toe...I need to try that!
Happy Holidays!

Great work- I do love the colours in that yarn, and your ratings comments are great- I'm looking forward to seeing how the others stack up.
I'm interested in Jessica's comments on the direction of the spiral- I think I'll have to try this pointy toe out myself (that is, if I can bear to go top down again..).

I just got this book for Christmas. Likely, you'll have them all knit before I even cast on, so I'll knit vicariously through you for now while I finish my tardy Christmas knits...
