Spiral Madness

Spiral scarves are in the air.  I've seen them knit length wise, crocheted, and knit using short rows.  Ever one to join the band wagon -- when there's a party going on -- I've combined the curve ratio of Teva Durham's Spiral scarf, with the slip stitch edging of Annie Modesitt's Backyard Leaves scarf, with the stockinette stitch of Amanda Blair Brown's Ruffles, with my favorite YO short row technique, with RY's Cashsoft yarn to create my variation on the spiral scarf theme.  And boy, oh boy, is it addicting.

Okay... I've had this semi-love of the Ruffles scarf since I first saw it. The only problem is... it seems like the spirally bits pair up, and I think that's a little odd. In your version, they're all nice and evenly spaced. I'd love it if you'd share (or sell) your combined pattern.

I tried Ruffles before, but got stucked because I haven't find the right yarn for it. Maybe on my next yarn spree...
Anyway, your combination of patterns is very smart, and the result looks really neat, love the colour too!

Love them! spirals are on my list this month too - I like yours, both of the patterns I'm considering seem a little floppy. If you feel like sharing....

Hey Nona -- How long did it take you to make this scarf?

Posted by: Jeanie | Nov 3, 2005 6:26:16 AM

You're a spiral pioneer!! I haven't tried any of the many patterns going around, but always mean to. Addicting huh?

This is gorgeous! And it will look so smashing with a chocolate brown coat. Very Nona!

What yarn are you using?

Love it! I actually have bought yarn to make something like it too. Very hip it seems from windowshopping downtown Göteborg ;-)

I've been dying to knit one of these too, but I haven't come across the right yarn for it yet. Yours looks great, though!

You know, I think you're on to something there . . . I have loop-d-loop, I've used YO short rows, and I've already got the yarn ready.

I now know what was missing: an ingenous way to combine it all.

Uh, it doesn't hurt that I already have stared Ruffles and promptly ditched it for being too boring and thought-consuming. I think I can handle this though! Thanks for the great idea.

Sounds like a future Nona Serial Pattern to me. Looks great.

I would really love to make this scarf but the directions are baffling to me. I get row 1 and row 2 but not row 3. I understand that the BYO creates another stitch on the right hand needle but it is confusing to me how to do this. Are you creating a YO with the yarn in front? Then, you say to S1, P1, S1. When I pearl the 2nd stitch, does it land up on the left hand needle because for some reason when I pearl it, it stays on the right hand needle? I have never done anything like this before and it just isn't making sense to me. If you could help me through this, I would be most appreciative.
Thanks so much!!!
