Concert Knitting

nona saw Maroon5 in concert tonight and believe it or not, I did not take my knitting.  This is not to say that I have never knit "in concert" before -- just not tonight.  Flashback to the Summer of 2003 -- you do feel a story coming on, don't you?

nona-son-the-elder -- a huge Dave Matthews Band fan -- was thrilled to learn that DMB was playing 2 nights at our local outdoor venue.  Excited to see both shows with a friend and determined for me to see DMB perform, he bought 2 tickets for Friday night and 3 tickets for Saturday -- all lawn seats.  The week before the concert we had a little conversation, which went something like this...

nona-son:  Mom are you excited about seeing DMB this weekend?

nona: Absolutely, I won't miss it!  I'm really glad you got me a ticket.

nona-son: Now you're sure you don't mind sitting by yourself?

Sitting by myself!  This was news to nona!

nona: Sure, I don't mind, as long as you don't mind if I bring my knitting.

So there I sat, by myself, on a beautiful summer evening, with a beer, in a lawn chair, knitting until it got dark, enjoying a wonderful concert.  That's the beauty of a teenager -- they want to share their interests and excitement for life with you, just as long as you don't sit with them.  nona can live with that.

You are bringing me back to my Dad escorting me and 4 of my friends to see Public Image Limited and Big Audio Dynamite, way back in 1992, and then, gasp, coming in. He instantly became the coolest dad ever in the eyes of my friends.

My mom went with me and my best friend to see Billy Idol way, WAY back in 1986. I think she had a better time than we did.

Here we have concerts at the horse racetrack in the winter/early spring for $5. I go early, get a good spot on the grass, whip out my smuggled drinks and snacks, and knit, knit, knit or read. Good ME time.

That sounds about right. There were years where I wouldn't sit with my parents at the movie theater, but was happy to go with them in the first place! Teenagers will be teenagers, right? At least he IS interested in doing stuff with you, even if not actually near you!

nonaBabe, I'm so jealous you got to see the DMB! Are you psyched for his new album next week? I went to UVA and back in the day would see him this close (||) at the local clubs and bars every Tuesday night. He's so cool and down to earth! I'm thrilled for his succes, but the large venues - it just ain't the same.
