Try Something New

Okay you knitters, grab some fine to light weight yarn and a pair of needles.  Here goes:

  1. Cast on 40 sts
  2. Knit into the front, then the back, then the front of each stitch -> 120 sts
  3. Bind off all stitches purl-wise.

What did you get?  Go on, give it a try -- you'll like it!

Damn, wish I had some yarn at work...does it make a corkscrew? That would be fun.

Oh that could be it Margene! =) I was trying theoretical knitting too, and only came up with a circle. Corkscrews...yes! Got to try when I get home tonight.

I don't have any yarn to hand either, but I'm pretty sure this would make a corkscrew because this is basically how I used to crochet corkscrews as a kid. I would make short ones to pin to my pencil eraser and long ones to go around my neck like a scarf. Of course, I did something like 2 or 3 crochets in each st instead of knitting, but same concept.

A corkscrew, then wind it up on itself and you have a flower!

You know, I keep meaning to try this, but never have any yarn handy when I'm online and when I'm near my yarn, I keep forgetting to give it a try. My guess is that this does some cool, spirally kind of thing, but it's only a guess . . . how about a hint to put those of us who can't get the instructions/yarn/needles/time thing properly coordinated? (grin)

Here is a new scarf from Knit Pick that is similar... I am planning to try it after I finish my current project (shawl/wrap):

I am going to have to try your spiral fringe, too! Thanks, Nona!

I really hope this makes a spiral!! I'm designing/knitting my first pattern - a cabled headband that ties under the chin for my daughter (on cold days when her hair's too pretty to hat lol). I wanted to attach 'ringlets' to the back but for the life of me couldn't find anything that told me how to spiral it!! If this works, a million thanks to you!! My husband can quit hearing me rant about 'but I had one as a kid with ringlets - how can no one have a pattern for it?!?!?'!!!
