The Final Task

The pattern is written and needs a few edits -- no problem.  My experimenting is done and all techniques are finalized -- great.  The test knitting is coming along smoothly -- on schedule.  Which leaves me to the last and most difficult task in the design process.  What should I name my version of the Sideways Socks, because let's be honest "Sideways Socks" is far, far to boring and predictable.  I'm looking for something snappy, something clever, something original.  And I'm looking to you, creative reader -- yes, you -- for suggestions.  Can you help?

Inspired by your earlier post, how about Elegant Solution?

sidewinders?

Posted by: monica | May 31, 2007 11:36:09 PM

Ooo, I like Judy's "Longitudes" and Monica's "Sidewinders." OTOH, I came a'commentin' to prove my boring-ing-ness because I LIKE the name "Sideways Socks."

Gee, while I'm here...
Longfellahs

Sidewinder? Crabby? Hermit (crab)?

Posted by: Cindy | Jun 1, 2007 12:45:15 AM

Socks on the side! Most of us have a sock going alongside our usual project, after all.

Posted by: Karen | Jun 1, 2007 3:36:25 AM

ohh, sidewinder....

Posted by: adrienne | Jun 1, 2007 3:38:12 AM

You guys are good! Everything I thought you had already said so please continue!

Posted by: Caitlin Al-Ansari | Jun 1, 2007 5:11:22 AM

Ummm.

Snappy Socks? You said you wanted a snappy name.

Horizontal socks?

Posted by: Sockbug | Jun 1, 2007 5:13:05 AM

How about Alternate Dimension socks? I don't know why I like that so much but I do.

Posted by: Liz | Jun 1, 2007 5:34:44 AM

Socks on the side. Hehe, yeah I am a dork.

Posted by: Arleta | Jun 1, 2007 5:39:56 AM

Vertical Edge. The patterning of the socks will be visible vertical when worn (unless you are lying down).

Posted by: Jen | Jun 1, 2007 5:52:42 AM

Perpensockular?

Posted by: grumperina | Jun 1, 2007 5:56:32 AM

I throw my vote to sidewinders or sidekicks!

Posted by: Leslie | Jun 1, 2007 5:59:10 AM

I was going to suggest Sidewinders also!
and Crossover

"Imaginary socks" (as imaginary numbers can be thought as "rotated 90 degrees": see "complex plane")

Posted by: T | Jun 1, 2007 6:27:16 AM

Instantly I thought "Sidewinder"... and many others did as well! :)

Posted by: Deb | Jun 1, 2007 6:37:11 AM

In honour of the STR colourway that you're knitting the socks with you should DEFINITELY call the socks the "Mojave Desert Sidewinder"! That's a kind of sidewinder snake that lives in Red Rock Canyon!

Socks on the Side was my first thought, but I see others have beat me to it. How about Pinot Noir (after the movie Sideways)?

Posted by: Laura | Jun 1, 2007 7:12:54 AM

I was going to say... well, now I can't remember because I like Perpensockular so much.

Posted by: Carrie | Jun 1, 2007 7:27:36 AM

Because they make me feel like dancin'"

Horizontal Mambo

Dance a Little Sidestep

Shuffle off to Buffalo

Posted by: Carol in Oregon | Jun 1, 2007 7:41:35 AM

Oh, gosh. I'm bad at this stuff. I like Perpensocular and Sidewinders. Pinot Noir also popped into my head, so I'm glad I'm not alone. "Ninety Degrees" crossed my mind, but thought that might sound like a temperature rather than the degrees rotated. Longitude--I like that one too.

Posted by: Jennifer | Jun 1, 2007 8:17:33 AM

I'm thinking about how there are "toe up" socks - what if the name had ankle in it b/c it's knit ankle to ankle? (I look at and say that word too many times, and it starts to sound funny)

what about something regarding the word plane b/c you're knitting the sock on a different plane: In mathematics, a plane is the fundamental two-dimensional object. Intuitively, it may be visualized as a flat infinite piece of paper. Most of the fundamental work in geometry, trigonometry, and graphing is performed in two dimensions, or in other words, in a plane.

Plane socks. Ha ha.

Oh well, whatever you call them, I'm really looking forward to trying your pattern! I keep checking everyday! Thanks for all your hard work!!

Posted by: Spirals | Jun 1, 2007 8:25:32 AM

I really like Socks on the Side, omg you people are creative! So what about... uuuuh... OK how about "Sockways"?
OK never mind. I liked Pinot Noir too... :D

Posted by: Kate | Jun 1, 2007 8:31:48 AM

"Crustacean". How did I get to this? Well, the sock testing color reminds me of cooked crabs/newspapers, mallets on a picnic table in the summertime - and crabs skitter along sideways...can you tell I'm from Baltimore, Hon?

Posted by: Barbara | Jun 1, 2007 8:32:27 AM

'Outside the Box Socks' (as in thinking outside...)

'Short Row Symphony'

'Socks in Profile'

'Perpensockular' makes me laugh.

Posted by: Harper | Jun 1, 2007 8:33:18 AM

Ooh, way too many hot contenders already! I like "sideswipe" & "perpensockular" & "sidekicks" & "longitudes" & "lateral cover" & "socks on the side" & a bunch more. . . I at least have SEEN the socks in person and they are indeed elegant. How about "nifty sideways socks"? Pretty dull compared to the other names!

Posted by: Gretchen | Jun 1, 2007 8:42:39 AM

Transverse Twinkletoes?

Sidelong Glances?

Posted by: Kabira | Jun 1, 2007 9:22:48 AM

I like "Perpensockular" and "Horizontal Mambo" and "Sideswipe". But based on Spiral's comment I'll make the obligatory pun, how about "Socks on a Plane"? Or also from Spiral's comment, how about "The Ankle Bone's Connected To The Ankle Bone Socks". Although the seam is not at the ankle bone so that's not really accurate. In my defense, I think I'm coming down with something today so what seems funny to me quite possibly isn't.

Oh I know, a homage to our grandmothers (or great-grandmothers) "Elegantly Turned Ankle Socks"

Posted by: Ronni | Jun 1, 2007 9:24:12 AM

The knitting is orthogonal to the "normal" way to knit socks.

Orthogonal Elegance Socks?

Perpensockular is very good.

When I read your request I immediately thought "Sidewinder" or "Sidestep."
(I'm apparently not the first to thing of the first choice!)

Posted by: Gina | Jun 1, 2007 10:51:15 PM

hmmm, i was gonna suggest socks on the side too, bit i see others already have... good luck on picking a name, there are some excellent ideas here.

Posted by: Dee | Jun 2, 2007 12:35:44 AM

Snappy names are good, and wow, there are some really great suggestions in the comments, but I think I'd go with something easy to remember that highlights what's different about these - which brings me right back to Sideways Socks or maybe Sidewinders.

Posted by: Sue | Jun 2, 2007 5:34:02 AM

I love your sideway sock pattern. Will keep checking back-so impressive to peek into the design process. For a name, how about "flat feet" because they are made in one flat sheet?

Posted by: Heather | Jun 2, 2007 12:07:28 PM

I'm another one of those people who actually likes Sideways Socks. Of course, I also think that Sidewinders sounds pretty cool, too! (I guess a lot of people think the same way, judging by the comments.) I keep trying to think of something original to suggest, but it seems that part of my brain has closed down for the day. *laughs*

Posted by: Ria | Jun 2, 2007 4:08:18 PM

I'm sure it's been suggested already, but I'd call them Side Steppers--the "side" part represents the construction, the "steppers" part implies socks (to me, anyway), and you're "sidestepping" the traditional sock pattern...

Posted by: Stephanie | Jun 2, 2007 7:14:35 PM

I was going to suggest Sidewinders, too - and found I wasn't the first, second, or third to come up with that idea. Must be a good one ;-)

"Not your grandmothers socks!"

Posted by: Kimberly | Jun 2, 2007 11:24:34 PM

I, too, like "Sidewinder" and "Elegant Solution"
What about:

Posted by: Ruth | Jun 3, 2007 9:49:16 AM

How about Horizontal Socks?

Posted by: Rita | Jun 3, 2007 11:17:32 AM

Or, it occurred to me last night-what about sideswiped? or my other inspiration "ping pong" because they go back and forth like a ping pong game.

Posted by: Heather | Jun 3, 2007 12:08:22 PM

Matrix socks.
i know it is a name of a movie, but those lines remenber me of all the monitors with those mesages!

Posted by: Cristina | Jun 3, 2007 12:09:32 PM

I'm not sure if I'm happy or disappointed to see that I'm not the only one to think of Pinot Noir. Or maybe Miles' Socks, or "I am not drinking any f---ing Merlot" socks. But really, I like just plain Sideways Socks best.

Posted by: Michelle | Jun 3, 2007 7:43:48 PM

My immediate thought was "Nona Socks."

But after reading these, I think "Sidewinder" is pretty great too.

Posted by: YTT | Jun 4, 2007 7:55:45 AM

Ladies and Gentlemen, knitters everywhere. Presenting the fabulous pair of Nona's Such Great Heights Socks.
