24 Enables Sock Heels

Listen closely my friends, nona has a confession to make.  I'm completely -- 100% -- addicted to 24.  Yes, yes, I know the show is completely unrealistic -- how can they expect us to believe that CTU agents consistently travel through LA without encountering traffic -- but those cliff hangers just keep me coming back for more.  I just finished episode 13 from season 4 and my steel hard willpower is the only thing keeping me from hoping in my car and racing to the video store for the next DVD.  On a positive note, I've been knitting my Madder Socks -- the first pair in my mini-master sock study -- as I'm glued to the boob tube.

I've knit several pairs of socks, but have only knit 2 types of sock heels -- a short row heel and the basic top down heel featured in most modern day sock patterns.  Each pair of socks I'll be knitting for this sock study features a different heel and toe.  This sock uses the "Dutch" or "Horseshoe" heel.

Instead of using the standard slip stitch "Heel Stitch", this sock's heel flap is worked in stockinette stitch.  It also includes a single centered "seam stitch" worked in reverse stockinette stitch.   The heel flap seems to be a little deeper than I'm used to -- hum, I wonder how it will fit.
The heel is turned using short rows  -- the distance between the short row turns remains constant, resulting in a very square heel.

Stitches are then picked up around the heel flap and a standard gusset is used to shape the sock's foot down to the required size.

Tomorrow, I'll pick up the next 24 DVD and will hopefully finish the socks!

Hey Nona, I'm a 24 nutcase too! I also started after the fact, so to speak, by renting the first season on DVD. Since then -- addiction! I even have the CTU phones ringtone loaded to my cell phone -- an anniversay gift from my husband. Now how lame is that? I can't explain it ... I'm a peace lover, nature lover, and rather sensible gal, but that show grabs me! Thanks for being a comrade.

I am in love with 24! Jack Bauer is my man I tell you.

Can't wait to see the new socks, this may be the inspiration I need to try a new heel in my next sock.

Ahhh, 24...yes, another addict. Tried to get into it in the middle of a season but just couldn't. When A&E started it on Mondays, I jumped right in. Now plan the day to sit and knit to Jack's escapdes...yippee! Thanks for your glove lessons. Haven't tried them yet, but after the holidays, Jack and I will be knitting up a storm.

Tony's more my speed, but I swear, my husband is in love with Jack. He's gets a little giddy whenever the beeping starts. It's very cute.

When we watched the first season, my husband had just had hip surgery and there was a blizzard. We watched the entire season in like five days. Crazy, crazy, crazy. But it was such an intense experience, he won't let us watch the new episodes each week - we have to tape a bunch and watch like four episodes in a row. More craziness.

Your sock looks great - can't wait to see what you think of all the news heels and toes.

I'm fascinated by your mini-master's program. I've been wanting to do something like this since before my first sock, but I have such a huge list of WIP's and wanna knits, that I've not yet been able to fit it in, and don't know when I ever will.

Ah, the curse of being a newish knitter wanting to do all the great current AND recent patterns. But then again, it's all those great patterns that led me to knitting in the first place, so I can't really resent them.

Interesting sock. Will you show us a "how it fits" picture when you are done??

hi nona! i am a fan of your blog, had to comment since you did mention 24, aka the best show on TV. My boyfriend and I are planning a party for the 2 hour season premiere (not to mention the 2 hour special the Next DAY!) So good!

Love the socks! I've only made two pairs in my knitting career (just recently) - so I'm interested to see all the different techniques! Thanks for sharing :-)

My husband and I are completely transfixed by 24. I think DH has a little man-crush on Jack Bauer. I can't blame him.

I'm looking forward to reading more of your notes about the mini-masters program. I hope you'll enjoy the process!

Ooo, I love to hear your thoughts on the heel. I don't know much about placket heels, so it's nice to know what you think, even if you've only knit the two basic heels. I can't wait for the toe!
