Sock Exchange

Purly Whites and I are participating in the first annual "Sit on your ass and watch Wimbledon" sock exchange.  Now this sock exchange is no where near the scale of Sockapal2za, being just .5698% of the size -- i.e. 2 of us -- but nona's having a ton of fun participating.  All my planning, stewing, thinking, and buying are complete, so during Thursday's matches I'll cast on and start Purly's socks.

Yes I know, thrifty reader, I have enough yarn here to knit several pairs of socks, but I just love mixing and matching different yarns -- it must be a throw back to my quilting days.  For Purly's socks I'll be mixing a bit of conservative, with a splash of zany, and finishing with an unexpected surprise.  And remember, no two hand knit socks should ever -- no, never -- be exactly the same.  Hmm, I wonder?

I presume that the yarns are deliberately in Wimbledon colours? I love that! I haven't had a chance to catch any tennis yet. How is it going?

Thanks for the fabulous blog.

SOYAAWW sock exchange sounds like a great idea. Tell us, will you both be making tennis socks? :-)

When I discovered knitblogs I was excited and validated to find people like me. People who can't sit without doing something with their hands, people who love yarn, people who hide/hoard yarn, people who drive/love Mini Coopers...

I'm now completely thrown to find a knitting Nona. It's always unsettling when I meet one face to face, but 'the other' is usually tall/blond/great shoes or somehow completely NOT me.
To find a knitting Nona who seems so much like me: knitting, momhood (I have a 9yr old daughter), art (I have a degree in Art History)... it's kind of cool and weird at the same time.

I've got a sweater for my nona-husband and a fresh pair of broken cable stocks going right now. But I just bought/hid some great yarn from the Midwest Weavers Association convention that wants to be a shawl. I'm trying to exercise discipline by waiting until one of the other projects is finished.
My nona-daughter won't wear knitwear but does like helping me spin. We're honing our skills with the drop spindle.

Nice to meet you,
Nona

No two handknit socks should ever be the same, huh?? I like this philosophy! Its the refreshing opposite of what I usually strive for - absolutely matching self-striping socks.

I'm going to sit back and just watch that sock grow...sorta my own 'Wimbledon'. ;-)

I read Diana's comment above. I too have striven to match self-striping socks.
I consider the nona-remark about non-matching socks hand knit socks,as "permission" to give up the attempt.

Also - (in a whisper) to Nona-the-commenter above. Check Nona's archives for photos she has posted of herself. Tall, blonde, in great shape, and I'll bet her shoes are amazing. Read her blog anyway. It's always terrific.

Love it! The colours are gorgeous in that batch...whatever you choose! Can't wait...I'll be watching (the sock match not the tennis...sorry)

I AM SO EXCITED!!! I can barely contain myself here at work. All that beautiful yarn, all those beautiful colors and all for my very own pair of Nona-socks. This is better than Christmas!! I am a lucky girl. Thank you, Nona!

....and it only took me 11 hours to realize that those are the official colors of Wimbledon. D'oh! Apparently when I get overly excited I miss certain details. Nona, you are awesome!

Hey Nona, I have a non-Wimbledon related question: Have you ever purchased yarn from KnitPicks? Their prices are amazing, but I am worried that it is too good to be true (i.e. low quality). My LYS sells 100% wool at about 4,75 USD for 110yd/50g, and KnitPicks sells the same at 1,79 USD. Whaddya think? Any info would be fantastic.

Sincerely,

Christina in Indiana

Fun idea! Love those colors...

fabulous wimbledon colours. nona, can we see one of your quilts?

Posted by: anna | Jun 24, 2005 2:29:16 PM

Love the colors! Can't wait to see the socks. :-)

I agree about matching socks. The self-patterning socks I knit never come out exactly the same, which is half the fun. Do they match? Well, yes and no. :-)
