Wavy Hat - 2nd Installment

The Wavy Hat -- made to match nona-niece-the-petite's Wavy Scarf -- is done and ready to be mailed, which means it is time for the 2nd installment of the serial Wavy Hat pattern.  nona enjoyed knitting this hat and hopes you will too.

Wavy Hat and Scarf ready for nona-niece-the-petite.

If you remember when last we met, you had casted on 96 [108, 120, 126, 138] sts and worked in the Wavy Rib pattern until the hat measured 4 [5, 6.5, 7, 7.5] inches.  In this installment, we'll shape the crown of the hat and finish the darn thing.  nona would like to remind you that a pattern is merely a suggestion to the intelligent knitter -- please do things your way, not the way you're told.

Wavy Hat - Installment 2
Inspired by and intended to match Sarah Smith's Wavy Scarf

Installment 1 of the Wavy Hat pattern can be found here.

Directions
Body
Using 16-inch circular needles, CO 96 [108, 120, 126, 138] sts.
Join in a round being careful not to twist.
Work in the Wavy Rib until hat measures 4 [5, 6.5, 7, 7.5] inches.

Crown Shaping
It's time to shape the crown, which will be done over the next 9 rounds.  As you decrease try to stay in the Wavy Rib pattern as best you can.  It's important to decrease knits and purls evenly -- if you k2tog in the first decrease round, then p2tog in the next decrease round, etc.  This will help keep the Wavy Rib more or less on track.  When the pattern says "dec" you should either k2tog or p2tog, which ever makes the most sense for your rib.  Ready, here we go...

Rnd 1: Switching to double pointed needles or 2nd circular needle, *rib 4, dec* repeat to end of round - 80 [90, 100, 105, 115] sts
Rnd 2:  Work in Wavy Rib with no decreasing
Rnd 3: *rib 3, dec* repeat to end of round - 64 [72, 80, 84, 92] sts
Rnd 4: Work in Wavy Rib with no decreasing
Rnd 5: *rib 2, dec* repeat to end of round - 48 [54, 60, 63, 69] sts
Rnd 6: *rib 1, dec* repeat to end of round - 32 [36, 40, 42, 46] sts
Rnd 7: *k2tog, p2tog* repeat to end of round - 16 [18,20, 21, 23] sts
Rnd 8: *k2tog, p2tog* repeat to end of round - 8 [9, 10, 11, 12] sts
Rnd 9: *k2tog* repeat to end of round - 4 [5, 5, 6, 6] sts

Finishing
Cut working yarn, leaving an ample tail.  Using a tapestry needles, thread working yarn through the 4 [5, 5, 6, 6] sts, removing the sts from the knitting needles.   Pull to tighten.  Bring yarn to the inside.  Weave in all ends.
